Parents and privacy
How Tall Grass Club saves progress, what it stores and how to delete it. In short: no accounts, no emails, no passwords and no ads.
What Tall Grass Club is
A free, unofficial fan game for catching and collecting Pokémon, plus a Pokédex, puzzles and quizzes. It isn't connected to Nintendo, Game Freak, Creatures or The Pokémon Company. There are no ads, no in-game purchases and no chat between players.
How saving works
- On this device. Progress saves automatically in the browser, so it's there next time.
- A secret code. After the first catch, the game makes a random 8-character code, like K7QM-3XPA, and keeps a copy of the progress on our server under that code.
- Other devices. Typing the code on another phone or computer brings the progress there.
There's no way to get a lost code back, because we don't know who it belongs to. We suggest saving it as a picture (there's a button for this in the game) and keeping it somewhere safe. Anyone who has the code can load that game, so it's best kept within the family.
What we store
- Game progress only: Pokémon caught and their levels, the bag, missions, badges, the look of the player's character and any nickname they type in.
- We don't ask for or store names, emails, ages, locations or photos. We suggest children use a nickname, not their real name.
- No advertising cookies. If you choose "Allow" on the small note at the bottom of the site, we use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages are popular. It's set up with advertising features and Google Signals switched off, and it only runs if you allow it. Choosing "No thanks" keeps it off.
- Leaderboards: the Who's That challenge has a weekly top 20. On it, players only appear as a made-up name chosen by us (like "Speedy Eevee 482") with their character picture and score, so nobody can type anything onto it. Families and friends can also start a private club; club members see each other's nicknames and scores, and only people with the club code can see it. Scores are linked to a random player number, never to the secret code.
- Our server keeps short-lived technical logs (like any website) and a temporary counter to stop the save system being spammed.
Trading with friends
Players can swap one Pokémon with a friend using a short trade code that lasts 20 minutes. The friend only sees the nickname, the character and the Pokémon being offered. There's no chat and no way to message other players. The Pokémon sent leaves the player's team but stays in their Pokédex.
Other services the site uses
To show Pokémon pictures, cries and trading cards, the browser loads them from PokéAPI (via GitHub) and TCGdex, and fonts from Google Fonts. Like any website request, these services can see the device's internet address. We don't send them any game data.
Delete a save
This removes the progress from this browser and, if there's a secret code, deletes our copy of it too. It can't be undone.
Questions
Email hello@tallgrassclub.com. If you'd like us to delete a save but no longer have the device, send us the secret code and we'll remove it.
